About

Happier Writers =

A better world

The Writers Happiness Movement grew out of wanting to live in a world where happiness, kindness, inclusion, and creativity matter, where those are the things that build the foundation for everything else. It is based on the belief that we—as writers and humans, as individuals and as community—have the complete power to create this world in a way that is inclusive, accessible, and sustainable, and that supports every single one of us in being who we are and writing what we write.

There are two parts to the Writers Happiness Movement:

Part One:

Happiness For You

In which you receive an ongoing supply of free happiness tools created specifically for writers, all designed to help you access more happiness, and therefore more psychic space to write (and live).

Part two:

Happiness For All

In which the Writers Happiness Movement supports writers with programs such as grants, residencies, and so forth, all of which are sustained through a cooperative, community-based structure that reflects a world where writing, kindness, and joy matter.

For every writer who wants to live in a world where writing is valued and kindness matters.

The Writers Happiness Movement is designed to promote a world where writers are supported, with a long-term vision of building a powerful, community-fueled, writer-centric way to fund large-scale programs that benefit writers everywhere—such as retirement homes and co-living spaces for writers supported completely by the Writers Happiness Movement (and we will get there!).

The values of the Writers Happiness Movement are reflected in two ways:

1. All the writers happiness tools are free to any writer with email access

2. The programs that help writers as a whole are supported financially by an open-handed, non-hierarchical, community-based structure. If you’d like to support this vision of the world, you can do so by becoming a patron of happiness at $5/month. This monthly patronage lets me know what kinds of programs the Writers Happiness Movement can support. The goal is to reach 100,000 writers each supporting this vision of the world at $5/month, by 2026. This kind of support means we can build and maintain co-living residency spaces for writers, retirement homes for writers that are entirely paid for by this movement, and large-scale grants, as well as expand the current offerings of free online writers’ retreats, yoga, and more.

This structure was created to serve as an alternative to our current systems, which tend to be, at their root, dependent on keeping us afraid, separate, convinced we aren’t enough, and embedded in systemic racism, sexism, and othering. By their nature, systems based on fear can never promote authentic happiness.

Right now, particularly, so many of us are exhausted, depleted, overwhelmed. Many of us are trying to juggle day jobs, families, friends, responsibilities, and activism while still somehow finding time to write. We want to be a force for good, to help fix some of the awfulness in the world, and yet we don’t always know what makes the most sense or will actually make a difference.

But here’s the thing: writing is your contribution to healing the world.

If you are a writer—yes, even if you’re not writing at the moment or even if you’re not published yet—that is enough. The Writers Happiness Movement is meant to be a place where you don’t have to do or be anything. The idea is that it’s all taken care of for you. This is where you can take a breath and remember who you are, that what you do matters, and that you are not alone.

There are so many of us actively choosing love over fear. Choosing kindness over anger. Choosing to write and create even if it sometimes seems impossible.

Welcome home. We’re so glad you’re here.

But what does happiness have to do with writing, anyway?
